Below are Frequently Asked Questions about full-site SSL.
Q: Do SAGE websites support encryption (also referred to as full-site SSL)?
A: Yes, all SAGE websites support encryption.
Q: Is there a cost?
A: No, we are offering full-site SSL certificates at no additional charge. Other providers charge for this on a per-domain basis, if they even offer it at all. Obtaining the SSL certificate is included as an option at no additional charge with your Pro site subscription.
Q: How do you turn it on?
A: In SAGEmember.com, under WebExpress | Access & Security, there is a option to turn on full-site SSL. After turning the option on, it will take approximately 5-10 minutes to add enable the site certificate and show that it is secure. During that time period, the site may show a "certificate issue" or similar warning. Wait a few minutes and then refresh the page. See the help on the right side of the page for more information.
Q: What about additional domains?
A: All domains on the site will be secure. If new domains are added to the additional domain name list at a later time, they will get a certificate automatically within 5-10 minutes after the name is added.
Q: Is there any reason that it won't work?
A: In order to verify the certificate, the domain name must be pointing to our servers. If the domain name is pointing elsewhere (and potentially -redirecting- to your SAGE website) then the certificate will not verify. If the domain is pointed to our nameservers, it will all be set up properly out of the box. If you are not are using us for DNS, then you will need to properly configure your DNS records. Our web support team can assist in identifying any issues and provide guidance on how to resolve. If you have any issues when you turn on the full-site SSL option, we recommend you turn the option back off and contact our web support team to assist you.
Q: Are there any other considerations and why do you not turn this option on by default?
A: Although most sites will switch to full-site SSL without any issues, if you have custom code or plug-ins that point to non-SSL sites, turning on the full-site SSL could require some tweaking of your custom code to fix any issues. The web support team can assist with any issues that may come up.
Q: Does it work with "subdomains" like "shop.mydomainname.com"?
A: Yes, it will work with any domain name assigend to the site.
Q: Is this about security, SEO, or both?
A: Ultimately, both. Having a full-site SSL certificate does mean that the entire site is now encrypted and secure. However, keep in mind that SAGE sites have always used SSL for sensitive data transmission such as cart submissions, password forms, etc. It is important to remember that all our e-commerce sites or sites that have full-site SSL turned off are still secure in terms of protecting sensitive data. Aside from security, the main reason to have the full-site SSL is for SEO purposes. Google and other search engines promote full-site SSL sites and browsers will soon start showing more visible warnings on insecure sites.
