How to turn off email scanning with McAfee Security Center

Issue:

The "scan email" feature of McAfee VirusScan (part of McAfee Security Center) works with Microsoft Outlook to scan incoming and outgoing emails to check for viruses.  This functionality can cause Outlook to have problems sending or receiving emails in certain cases.  This could result in an error 800ccc0f when downloading email, duplicate or multiple emails being sent or received, or just delays or failures while Outlook is sending or receiving mail.  Many of these issues are caused because the session is not completing properly due to the virus scanning software.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, you will either need to update McAfee Security Center and/or Microsoft Outlook or turn off email scanning.  We recommend turning off email scanning if it is not working properly.  Your system will still be protected because the regular auto-protect feature of McAfee will detect a virus in an email as you open the message.  The only difference is that the message will be downloaded (with the email scanning, McAfee would warn you as the message is downloading).

To turn off email scanning:

1.  Go to Start | Programs | McAfee Security Center.

2.  Click the VirusScan area.

3.  Click the "Configure VirusScan" option.

3.  Uncheck the option labeled "Scan email and attachments".

4.  Click OK.  You will need to re-start Microsoft Outlook for the changes to take effect.

More Information:

This is a compatability issue between McAfee VirusScan and Microsoft Outlook.  The email scanning features works fine on most systems, but certain configurations are known to cause problems.  This is not an issue with your SAGE email services.  If you would like to correct the problem (rather than turning off the email scanning), you should contact McAfee or Microsoft.
